Donald Trump faces backlash over Muslim database plan

Leading Republican candidate is accused by presidential rivals of manipulating people's fears after attacks in Paris

Donald Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate, has provoked an angry backlash for proposing a database to track Muslims in the United States following the deadly attacks in Paris.
Predictably his comments attracted the condemnation of Democrats and sparked demonstrations around the country.
But even his rivals for the nomination, who have frequently followed Mr Trump's policy lead and who talked up the threat from foreign Muslims this week - such as Ben Carson who compared Syrian refugees with "rabid dogs" – said he had gone too far.
